Big Deal 13 boasts democratic method of moving art
SOUTH OF MARKET — Visual Aid held its art sale and fundraiser, Big Deal 13, on November 11 at SOMArts Gallery, 934 Brannan Street. The event included an auction, party and more than 600 artworks by Bay Area artists that were available for purchase at a fixed price of $150 each. All proceeds are to benefit Visual Aid’s programs for artists with HIV/AIDS, Breast Cancer and other life-threatening illnesses.
Programs sponsored by Visual Aid include an ArtBank and Voucher Program for free art supplies, exciting exhibition opportunities, career services, image archives and a workshops and lecture series.
According to Julie Blankenship, executive director of Visual Aid, the affordable art sale is “truly a unique model”. Unlike any other art event, Big Deal offers hundreds of original works of art by famous and lesser-known artists alike, and sold for the price of $150 plus tax, “in such a democratic manner”.
New and seasoned collectors found the opportunity to bring home affordable paintings, prints, drawings, sculpture and photographs. The participating artists for Big Deal included nationally and internationally recognized Bay Area artists. Some of the artists included David Hockney, Julianna Bright, J. John Priola, Ryan Jacob Smith, Inez Storer, John Casey, Ann Veraldi, Kara Maria, Mark Paron, Howie Cherman, Ken Leaf, Christiane Robbins, and many more.
Participating galleries included Gallery Paule Anglim, Bucheon Gallery, Charles Campbell Gallery, Catharine Clark Gallery, Jack Fischer Gallery, Trillium Press, Toomey-Tourell Fine Art, Claudia Chapline Gallery, Gallery 16, Paulson Press, Andrea Schwartz Gallery, Gallery 647, Alan Wofsy Fine Arts and many others.
